Het lelijkste dorpsplein van Italië ligt in Puglië. Om het te bereiken moet je eerst een bergje opfietsen (en in mijn geval elke keer een beetje sterven omdat je niet zo goed bent in bergjes), daarna met gevaar voor eigen leven langs de wilde honden sjezen die zich op je banden proberen te gooien als waren het bologneworsten, om dan af te draaien langs de vuilnisbelt.
Tot het dus voor je ligt: een lelijk plein met een bankje, een klein dorpswinkeltje waarin je meer vage figuren aantreft dan cola light, en naast dat winkeltje een plastieken tuinmeubelset waarop elke morgen door de dorpelingen wordt samengetroept om cappuccino te drinken die door winkeleigenaar Tonino wordt geschonken.
Ik kan het weten, van dat lelijk plein. Vorig jaar vatte ik immers een week lang elke nieuwe dag aan op dat plastieken tuinterras. En ik vond het er heerlijk. Omdat het zo’n plek is waar elk moment iemand kan stoppen met een koffer vol levende verse vis.
